UNC released a brief official statement confirming the action but declined to disclose specific reasons behind the suspension. Addressing the situation, university spokesperson Dean Stoyer stated that “as is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic and has no reflection on the merits.”
Longtime connection to Bill Belichick
Lombardi joined the Tar Heels program in December 2024 alongside legendary head coach Bill Belichick. The two share a deep professional relationship dating back to their time with the Cleveland Browns in the 1990s.
Lombardi later worked alongside Belichick on the New England Patriots coaching staff, helping win two Super Bowl titles.
Shaping an NFL-style program
In his role as general manager, Lombardi was tasked with reshaping North Carolina’s operations into a pro-style organization.
