Prince William and Princess Kate are reportedly determined to protect Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis from excessive public exposure by adhering to a strict "gentleman's agreement" designed to safeguard the young royals' privacy as they grow up in the spotlight.
Speaking to GB News ahead of his new book, The Four Wives of Windsor, royal correspondent Cameron Vigar said William and Catherine are likely to protect their children's future partners with the same media privacy that allowed the Prince of Wales to study at the University of St Andrews largely out of the spotlight.
Vigar exclusively told the outlet: "The University of St Andrews was great for William and Catherine; the British media should get some credit here.
The royal expert added, "The Gentleman's Agreement to leave William alone at university did hold, and of course, it was a camera crew from a TV company owned by his uncle Edward - that was the only one that actually broke it."
He said, "In terms of when George, Charlotte and Louis complete university, once they're in their 20s, I think it'll be a similar deal, and privacy law is changing all the time. There will be similar conversations.”
Vigar went on to share, "I would have thought occasional public bust-ups as well about what can be printed about the people that we know are going out with the young royals... it'll definitely develop."
He suggested the strategy mirrors the Prince of Wales's publicly expressed plans for his future reign.
Prince William on media scrutiny
In the 2025 Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveler, Prince William said "change is on my agenda" for his future reign and vowed to shield his children from the intense media scrutiny he faced.
Vigar said those remarks hinted at the privacy measures William hopes to introduce.
He argued that the Princess of Wales's slow and carefully managed introduction to royal life offers the blueprint William and Catherine are likely to adopt.
