Carson Kvapil earned his long-awaited first NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, his celebratory burnout over the track’s hallowed start-finish line sparked immediate backlash from motorsport fans and track officials.
The sacred Yard of Bricks
Indianapolis Motor Speedway features a historic three-foot strip of bricks preserved from 1909. Officials heavily discouraged burnouts on the bricks because removing tire rubber requires tedious hand scrubbing. Shortly after the race wrapped up, track personnel were seen on their hands and knees manually cleaning the black tire streaks.
Miscommunication on the track
NASCAR attempted to radio Kvapil during his cool-down lap to remind him of the guideline but the message never reached him.
Having disconnected his headset early during the excitement, Kvapil admitted in his press conference, “I was unplugged, so I have no idea if they said anything or not. Yeah, I made a little bit of a mistake there, probably.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr. issues apology
JR Motorsports co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. quickly stepped in on social media to defuse the situation and apologize for the inconvenience. Earnhardt posted:
“Our apologies. The driver was unplugged from his radio when NASCAR sent the reminder. Lots going on when that all went down. Certainly, regret any inconvenience.”
Celebrating a major milestone
Despite the post-race controversy, Earnhardt remained deeply proud of Kvapil’s emotional milestone victory, sharing, “He’s like a son, almost. You work with these guys for so long and you work so hard. You just want them to have success.”
