A recent research found some shocking facts about the sugary drinks that are not only posing a significant threat on your health but also doubling a person’s risk of stomach cancer.

As per research published in the journal Gastro Hep Advances, sugar-sweetened beverages might more than double a person’s risk of stomach cancer.


Senior researcher Dr. Andrew Chan stated, “This is the first study to demonstrate an association between sugar-sweetened beverage intake and gastric cancer in a U.S. population.”

“Gastric cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer death worldwide, but we’ve known very little about how diet might contribute to this cancer,” Chan added.

For the study, researchers assessed data for more than 112,000 health professionals participating in two long-term research projects.

Both studies collected detailed diet, lifestyle and health information on participants.

Results indicated that people who drank nearly one sugar-sweetened beverage a day had a 2.5 times increased risk of stomach cancer, in contrast to those who drank less than one per month.

Sugary drinks include lemonade, soda and sports beverages.

Increased consumption of fructose, the main sweetener in these drinks, also linked to higher risk of stomach cancer.

Research further revealed that artificially sweetened drinks were not associated with any increased odds of stomach cancer, researchers found.

As per scientists, higher risk may be due to several underlying reasons like weight gain, increased insulin resistance, hormone imbalances or inflammation.
