The Royal Palace has provided a crucial update about the King’s health.
On Monday, August 24, Hello! reported that the Norwegian Royal Family shared a major update about King Harald V’s health after he was rushed to the hospital last week.
As per the statement, the 89-year-old monarch’s health has “deteriorated,” but he is currently in a “stable condition.”
Harald, who is Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, was admitted to the National Hospital in Oslo last week with haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood disorder where red blood cells break down faster than the bone marrow can make new ones.
In an urgent update to the press on Sunday, August 23, the Norwegian Royals shared about King Harald’s condition, stating, "His Majesty the King's health deteriorated over the weekend. The King is receiving antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood, and has responded to this treatment."
They added: "His condition is stable. His Majesty will remain at Oslo University Hospital (Rikshospitalet) and is on sick leave until further notice."
As the monarch is on a two-week sick leave, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, is acting as regent.
Amid the hospitalization, King Harald’s upcoming visit to Trøndelag, scheduled for September 1 and 2, has been called off, with his wife, Queen Sonja, set to undertake the engagement solo.
King Harald V hospitalization
On Monday, August 17, the Royal Family of Norway shared that King Harald V was taken to the National Hospital of Oslo after a medical examination.
In a statement released at the time, the Palace shared that His Majesty has been "treated with cortisone for the blood disease hemolytic anaemia in recent weeks."
This led to "fluid accumulation in the body that requires treatment in hospital," as the Palace's aides revealed that the oldest monarch was already "on sick leave for two weeks."
"His Royal Highness the Crown Prince is Regent during this period. We will return to the consequences this will have for the Royal House's official program," the Royals shared.
For those unversed, King Harald V has been reigning as Norway’s monarch since January 17, 1991.
