The Food and Drug Administration announced a recall for one lot of Vitruvias Therapeutics Inc.'s thyroid tablets as they are "superpotent" and can cause hyperthyroidism.

On Monday, the company announced its thyroid tablets, USP 30 mg having a lot number of 504950, were potentially superpotent.

Consumption of super potent thyroid tablets can significantly increase thyroid levels in the body, causing hyperthyroidism, leading to some symptoms like obesity, heat intolerance, nervousness, muscle weakness, hypertension, chest pain, palpitation, and arrhythmias.

According to the company, those at greater risk are the elderly, pregnant women and infants, especially if consumed over extended periods of time.

As of Monday, the company stated it has not received any reports of reactions in relation to the recall. The recalled lot was distributed all across the nation in the USA to Vitruvias Therapeutics' direct accounts from Jan. 31, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2025.


The company said roughly 1,955 units were sold and that it was contacting wholesalers by email and phone to discontinue distribution and arrange for destruction of all recalled products.

Thyroid tablets, USP are a natural preparation derived from porcine thyroid glands composed of levothyroxine and liothyronine. They are used to treat hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.
