In a major royal bid, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s godson is receiving support to ascend the throne.
On Friday, August 28, GB News reported that Elizabeth II’s godson, Crown Prince Alexander Karađorđević, is being backed by a Serbian political party to become the king of the Republic of Serbia.
As the country is heading towards its upcoming elections, the monarchist and national-conservative political party named Pokret obnove Kraljevine Srbije, abbreviated as POKS, which is the Movement for the Restoration of the Kingdom of Serbia, is intensifying its campaign to reinstate Alexander as head of state.
POKS believes that the Karađorđević dynasty represents Serbia’s historical and royal connection to its past, and is the only political party in the Serbian parliament whose aim is just to bring back the monarchy.
However, it is worth mentioning that even if Crown Prince Alexander becomes the king, his role would be completely ceremonial just like the British monarchy.
"We are advocating the restoration of Serbia as a modern constitutional and parliamentary monarchy. We are not asking Serbia to return to the 19th century. We are asking Serbia to build a modern 21st-century democracy on its own historical foundations," said POKS’ deputy president Vladimir Đorđević.
He explained, "The King will not govern Serbia; the King will represent the state and national unity. Look at Britain, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands, these are modern democracies. We truly believe we can have a modern democracy in Serbiam.”
The parliamentarian also described Britain as "the mother of all monarchies and democracy."
"We need a referendum. That is what we lost in 1945. The Serbian people have been hoping for this for the last 70 years," he added.
Who is Crown Prince Alexander Karađorđević?
Crown Prince Alexander Karađorđević is a member of Serbia’s former royal family and a descendant of the Karađorđević dynasty, which ruled Serbia and later Yugoslavia.
He was born in 1945 in suite 212 at Claridge's in London, and is the son of King Peter II and Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark.
Alexander was christened at Westminster Abbey and Queen Elizabeth II was his godmother, while her father, King George VI, became his godfather.
