A common sugar substitute used in chewing gums, oral care products and low-calorie foods may carry significant health risks. Landmark research reveals that high levels of Xylitol are associated with a greater danger of heart attacks, strokes and death.

What the science found

In a global study analyzing nearly 18,000 individuals over extended periods, scientists observed that participants with the highest Xylitol blood concentrations faced a 57% higher risk of suffering major cardiovascular events over six years compared to those with the lowest levels. High blood levels kept this heightened risk active even over a 30-year span.

How it affects the body

Xylitol appears to trigger blood platelets making them clump together much faster to form dangerous blood clots. Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic noted:

“In the presence of Xylitol, platelets become much more angry and ready to clot,” adding that “it’s as if our platelets have a kind of tastebud receptor for Xylitol that makes them go into overdrive.”

Re-evaluating ‘healthy’ alternatives

Consumers often choose sugar alcohols to lower calories or manage blood sugar but safety assumptions are being challenged. Dr. Marco Witkowski, lead researcher from Charite University Hospital, pointed out:


“Artificial sweeteners are consumed by people who think they are healthier than sugar and they are generally regarded as safe by regulatory agencies,” emphasizing that “our long-term findings in the general population highlight how little we know about the cardiovascular safety of Xylitol.”

Experts advise moderation. Small quantities found in toothpaste or mouthwash are unlikely to pose a threat but consuming large amounts in diet foods warrants caution, especially for individuals already at risk for heart disease.
