Apple’s iOS 27 has launched the latest “iPhone Handoff” feature that allows users to easily switch between two iPhones while the similar contact number will remain active on both devices.
During Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote, the feature was briefly mentioned; however, it got little explanation at the time.
The recently shared demonstration has provided a closer look at the functionality.
As per the demonstration, the recently introduced iPhone Handoff can be configured through the Cellular section in the Settings app.
It lets users designate one iPhone as their primary device and another as a companion handset.
The Cupertino-based tech giant will keep the main eSIM on the primary iPhone while offering the companion device with a companion eSIM.
With these new settings, users will be able to move their contact number between the two iPhones without manually transferring the SIM or changing their cellular account.
Cellular settings will be manipulated via the primary iPhone, while location sharing will be based on whichever device is actively using the phone number.
However, the feature comes with a range of requirements. Both iPhone will be needed to run on iOS 27, getting support from the user’s mobile carrier.
T-Mobile across the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany will reportedly be among the first carriers to support iPhone Handoff.
Availability
The feature could be especially useful for people who regularly switch between a personal and work iPhone but want to maintain a single phone number across both devices.
It’s worth mentioning Apple is likely to launch iOS 27 by the end of this month after multiple months of beta testing. Additional details regarding carrier availability and supported devices are likely to emerge before the public rollout.
