Serena and Venus Williams were the main attraction at the US Open; however, the duo failed to secure victory in their first-round match.
On Friday, September 4, Venus and Serena faced Chan Hao-ching and Maya Joint in a thrilling match at New York City's Arthur Ashe Stadium that lasted three hours and concluded with Chan and Joint winning in three sets.
The match was a spectacle, with the sisters battling back to force a 10-point match tiebreaker but then blowing a 5-0 lead and losing 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (10-7).
It was the legendary sisters' first Grand Slam together since the 2022 US Open, and 27 years after they first won the title.
Amid battling 4-1 in the third set, they caught up to tie the score, but then right at the end the Williams sisters faltered in front of a cheering crowd.
Serena came back to tennis this year at 44. Venus has continued to play on tour at 46.
Not Serena Williams' first defeat to Maya Joint
Serena lost to Joint for the second time this summer.
She fell to the Australian in three sets at Wimbledon in her return to singles play, and she and Venus then had to pull out of their doubles match after Serena hurt her knee, which delayed their return to the Grand Slam stage.
The sisters were once dominant in women's doubles, teaming to win 14 Grand Slam titles along with Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008 and 2012. They shared the No. 1 ranking in women's doubles for eight weeks.
Notably, Serena and Venus Williams have 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together, two US Open crowns, three Olympic gold medals, and another 30 Grand Slam singles titles between them.
