A measles outbreak in Pennsylvania worsens after the third death is reported in less than a month.
According to CNN, a 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, died from measles complications on Saturday, September 12.
The county coroner confirmed the third measles death on Sunday, as the United States faces the worst contagious airborne viral disease outbreak in 35 years.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said that they are working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Corner Greg Furlong told CNN that the woman who died had not received a measles vaccination.
Furlong stated, “This is a heartbreaking loss for the family and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. We ask that the public and media respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of their loved one."
Officials urge citizens to take precautions
The county chief deputy coroner and public relations officer emphasized the importance of public awareness.
Jason Stiver said, “Many people associate measles with a childhood illness, but it can lead to severe complications in individuals of any age. Measles is highly contagious and can result in serious respiratory illness, hospitalization, and, in rare cases like this, death.”
After confirming the first measles-related death in the county, Stiver urged residents to stay informed, take precautions, and follow guidance from public health officials.
"While cases of severe illness remain uncommon, this tragedy highlights that measles should not be taken lightly. Public health measures, early recognition of symptoms, and consultation with healthcare providers are important tools in protecting our community," Stiver added.
It is worth noting that the new death came after two casualties reported in Lancaster County at the end of August, the first connected to the viral illness in the state in 35 years.
Lancaster County has become the epicenter of Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak, with cases reaching 676 as of Friday, 108 of which were added in the previous week. One hundred twenty-four people have been hospitalized.
