In a shocking update, TikTok has suspended paid advertising for Musk, a documentary critical of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, sparking concerns regarding possible censorship as the film expands its theatrical release across North America.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, distributor Bleecker Street was informed on Friday that its advertising access would be permanently suspended because of repeated violations of TikTok’s political content policies.

The decision came as the Alex Gibney-directed documentary expanded to more than 470 screens.

Bleecker Street confirmed that it is appealing the decision, expressing disappointment over the timing.

The suspension could pose a significant impact on the film’s promotional campaign during a crucial weekend when more audiences are expected to watch it in theaters.

Although the documentary’s unpaid promotional account remains active, the distributor cannot pay to promote its posts or purchase advertisements.

A report suggested TikTok refused multiple promotional materials, including the film’s trailer and an advertisement featuring a quote from The New Yorker.

Additionally, the platform cited a static image in rejecting one advertisement.

TikTok has yet to publicly explain the certain violations behind the suspension.

As per correspondence reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, the company cited the severity of political policy violations, mentioning that several violations may prompt immediate suspension.

The nearly four-hour documentary assesses Musk’s business ventures, acquisition of Twitter, and political activities, including his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Additionally, the controversy added a new dimension to the documentary’s criticism of the cutting-edge technological companies and their influence over digital platforms.

It is pertinent to mention TikTok has no official affiliation with Musk; however, it is partly owned by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who appears in the documentary in connection with Musk’s acquisition of Twitter.

Meanwhile, Bleecker Street continues its appeal, while the film is likely to be released on HBO’s streaming platform in 2027.
