Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari elected as the 14th president of the country on Saturday, after securing majority votes in the National Assembly and the Senate.

As reported by Geo News, Zardari, who was the joint candidate of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) became the head of the state for the second time.

The 68-year-old politician was the opponent of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who was the candidate of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Zardari won the presidential elections by 255 votes while Achakzai managed to secure only 119 votes in the National Assembly and the Senate.

It is pertinent to note, 12 lawmakers of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) did not engage in the presidential elections.

Besides JUI(F) other parliamentarians who did not use their right to vote included Ijaz Chaudhry, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) senators Shibli Faraz, and Azam Swati, and Senator Muzaffar Hussain Shah from the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA).
