England's cricket team has secured a dominant 3-0 series victory over the West Indies at Edgbaston on Sunday, with captain Ben Stokes making history with the fastest Test half-century for his country.
Stokes, known for his aggressive batting style and leadership skills, reached his half-century in just 24 balls, surpassing Ian Botham's 1981 record of a 28-ball fifty.
As per BBC Sports, this remarkable achievement was part of a decisive performance where England needed 82 runs to win the third Test match. Stokes finished unbeaten on 57, including nine fours and two sixes, as England quickly reached their target in 7.2 overs.
Due to an injury to regular opener Zak Crawley, who was undergoing a scan for a broken finger, Stokes stepped up to open the batting. He seized the opportunity to attack from the outset, putting England in a strong position.
Reflecting on his record-breaking innings, Stokes mentioned that he wasn’t initially aware of the milestone until it was confirmed by assistant coach Paul Collingwood.
"A couple hit the middle of the bat, I was seeing it quite well," Stokes told BBC Test Match Special.
Meanwhile, Head coach Brendon McCullum praised Stokes' adaptability and leadership, stating, "When Zak had to go and get an X-ray, Stokesy said he would open, and that is fantastic from your leader. The way he struck the ball was absolutely beautiful."
Following this series victory, Stokes will play for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred before leading England in a three-Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 21.
