An 18-year-old student named Kobe turned a routine summer construction job into an extraordinary news story after discovering a massive gold stash worth over $10.4 million (€9 million).
An unbelievable discovery
While digging pipe lines for a sewage system at a former brewery site, Kobe spotted shiny objects in the soil. “At first I thought they were €1 coins,” Kobe recalled. “Then we saw a gold bar. It turned out to be a bit more than we thought.”
Hidden in the walls
The treasure consisted of numbered gold bullion bars, coins and nuggets sealed inside a plastic bag hidden within a bricked-in cellar wall.
“Apparently there used to be a cellar which they filled in later,” Kobe explained. “And the gold was really bricked in there, not in a safe or anything, so I think it really was hidden.”
Handed to the police
The crew realized the scale of their find and immediately called local authorities.
When asked about keeping it, Kobe admitted, “It’s simply too much money. If it were a few thousand euros, it might be feasible. But €9 million – you simply can’t keep that hidden.”
What happens next
The gold was moved to a high-security government vault in Brussels. Under Belgian law, authorities must hold the stash for five years to locate the legal owners. “If we did [get a reward], that would be a nice bonus,” Kobe noted as he waits to see what happens.
