The nation’s highest court stepped in to resolve a complex clash between state and federal judges by issuing an emergency order that effectively forces election officials to rely on the older district boundaries drawn in 2022.
State referendum suspends GOP redistricting plan
The dispute erupted after Republican lawmakers enacted a revised congressional map designed to give their party an extra House seat by targeting a Democratic-held district in Kansas City.
However, the voting rights group People Not Politicians successfully gathered over 300,000 signatures to put the controversial map to a public referendum.
The Missouri Supreme Court subsequently ruled that because a valid referendum was pending, the legislative map could not legally go into effect until voters weigh in, leaving the 2022 map active for the general election.
