As the 25th anniversary of September 11 approaches, former New York Giants star and Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan is sharing his deeply personal memories from the tragic attacks.
Strahan leads a new two-hour ABC News Studios special titled “9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later,” exploring how the nation began to recover through shared cultural moments.
A terrifying personal experience
Reflecting on the life-altering morning, Strahan recalled watching the events unfold from New Jersey.
“Sep. 11 was one of the scariest moments of my life. I remember the shock, the heartbreak and the feeling that nothing would ever be the same again,” Strahan shared.
The shift beyond sports
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, standard routines felt entirely secondary to the loss felt nationwide.
“All I could think about was the people who had lost loved ones and the incredible courage of the first responders. Football didn’t seem important,” Strahan expressed.
Finding comfort and unity
Eventually, returning to action showed the broad strength of community gathering. “When we returned to the field, I realized it was about more than the game. It gave people a chance to come together, support one another and begin to heal,” Strahan noted.
The documentary features notable figures like Derek Jeter, Pete Davidson and Jon Stewart to highlight how sports, arts and comedy helped restore hope.
A message of resilience
Ultimately, the retrospective focuses on the enduring spirit that emerged from heartbreak.
“This story is about honoring the lives we lost, celebrating the heroes who showed extraordinary courage and reminding us that even in our darkest moments, we’re stronger when we stand together,” Strahan stated.
