The Danish Family has been forced to cancel their attendance at Norway’s King Harald V’s funeral.
Recently, Amalienborg Palace announced that King Frederik X and Queen Mary had postponed their pre-scheduled state visit to Belgium, as they had to attend the Norwegian monarch’s state funeral.
However, the Royal Couple’s plan to mark their appearance on the somber event has now been hit with a big blow, as Queen Mary is forced to cancel her attendance at the funeral.
According to a major update shared by the Danish Royal Family, Queen Mary’s visit to Norway for King Harald V’s funeral has been called off due to Queen Margrethe II’s sudden hospitalization.
Taking to their Instagram Stories on Sunday, September 6, the Royal Family shared that Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II has been admitted to Rigshospitalet after feeling unwell.
According to the Royal House, Margrethe was diagnosed with mild dehydration and a new blood cloth in the hip region.
“Her Majesty Queen Margrethe was admitted to Rigshospitalet on Sunday after feeling unwell,” read the statement.
It continued, “A new blood clot in the hip region and mild dehydration have been diagnosed, both of which are being treated. Queen Margrethe is in good spirits and is doing well under the circumstances.”
“Queen Margrethe is expected to be hospitalized next week for both observation and treatment. This means that Her Majesty will unfortunately not attend King Harald's funeral in Oslo on Wednesday. The Royal House will announce when there is news,” the statement concluded.
King Harald V funeral
The state funeral for the late King Harald V of Norway is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. CEST at the Oslo Cathedral.
He died on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89 from complications related to hemolytic anemia, a rare blood condition.
