Ed Sheeran has taken a shocking step for his tour amid growing security concerns due to the ongoing Macklemore controversy.
On Thursday, September 17, the Daily Mail reported that the Perfect singer’s team are forced to make a drastic decision amid ongoing controversy as they are taking extra security measures ahead of his upcoming LOOP Tour shows in Philadelphia.
As per the update, a “sizable” number of police officers are expected to be present at the show, which comes just days after the Shape of You crooner dropped Macklemore from his tour following his “Free Palestine” speech.
Speaking to TMZ, Philadelphia Police Department’s spokesperson Jasmine Reilly stated, “Our officers are talking to his team to make sure all appropriate measures are taken' for his safety.”
Reilly also shared that the police department is working closely with the venue and event organizers in order to ensure the safety of concertgoers, staff, and residents in the area.
She also noted that the officers will be stationed inside and outside the stadium, while all attendees will pass through metal detectors and some may be searched.
While the police said that there have been no threats against the English singer so far, the situation could change before Saturday night.
The controversy has brought increased attention and backlash to the LOOP Tour as several celebrities and fans have been criticizing his move, while ticket prices for the concerts have also reportedly fallen significantly.
Sheeran and Macklemore’s drama began last week, after the 43-year-old rapper spoke in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank during his MetLife Stadium performances in New Jersey earlier this month.
A petition calling for his removal from the tour was launched following the speeches.
After Macklemore’s removal, five other opening acts also reportedly quit the tour.
