The number of antisemitic incidents of assault, vandalism, and harassment in the US hit a record high in 2023, according to a recent report released on Tuesday.
As informed by Reuters, the increase was mainly attributed to heightened anti-Jewish sentiment following the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Anti-Defamation League (ADL) counted 8,873 instances of antisemitic actions in 2023, which was a huge jump of 140% compared to 2022, and it's the highest number they've ever recorded since they started tracking these incidents in 1979.
After October 7, 2023, there were more than 5,200 reported incidents.
According to health authorities in Gaza, around 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in this counterattack and much of the area controlled by Hamas has been destroyed.
Jewish Americans are being targeted at school, at work, on the street, in Jewish institutions, and even at home.
ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said,"this crisis demands immediate action from every sector of society and every state in the union."
However, more Muslims and Palestinians in the US reported facing discrimination and attacks in 2023 than ever before.
On the other hand, a report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) revealed that complaints soared by 56% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 8,061.
About 3,600 of these incidents happened between October and December, according to CAIR.
Tensions between supporters of Israel and supporters of Palestine have intensified in the US, especially on college campuses, due to the ongoing conflict.
ADL documented 732 incidents on campuses from October 7 to the end of 2023, a significant increase from only 63 incidents during the same period in 2022.
