Thunderstorms hit through parts of the UK overnight, startling many residents with dramatic lightning strikes in the early hours of Thursday.

As per BBC, the south-east and south-west of England, along with southern Wales, were hit by heavy downpours, leading to potential travel disruptions in affected areas.

In Westbury, Wiltshire, lightning damaged the railway's electricity supply, leading to temporary closures.

While lines have since reopened, National Rail warns of possible delays and cancellations.

As storms move towards East Anglia and potentially the Midlands and Wales, the worst of the weather is expected to pass throughout the day.

However, Watford faced a house fire due to a lightning strike in the early hours. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the Met Office issued a thunderstorm warning for the south of England, cautioning of potential flooding and challenging driving conditions.

In Sussex, lightning strikes damaged two buildings overnight, including a care home in Elmer and a building at the University of Chichester.

No injuries were reported, and residents were relocated as a precaution.

Following the storms, sunshine is forecasted, with some areas possibly experiencing the warmest day of the year, reaching highs of 22°C in East Anglia.
