A recent study revealed a notable association between high olive oil consumption and decreased risk for dementia-related mortality.

The research published in JAMA Network Open discovered that consuming a minimum of 7 grams of olive oil daily, roughly equivalent to half a tablespoon, was associated with a 28% decrease in the risk of dementia-related mortality among over 92,000 participants in a prospective study.

Moreover, replacing one teaspoon of margarine and mayonnaise with an equivalent amount of olive oil was linked to an 8% to 14% decrease in the risk of dementia-related mortality.

Lead investigator Anne-Julie Tessier told Medscape Medical News, "Opting for olive oil, a natural product, instead of more processed fats such as margarine and mayonnaise, is a safe choice and may reduce risk of fatal dementia."

She further added, "Intervention studies are needed to confirm causal effect and optimal quantity of olive oil intake."
