The eyes are one of the most affected organs, and which is usually ignored, during a heat wave.

Ophthalmologists have also confirmed that extreme exposure to sunlight is harmful to the eyes. Eye experts have suggested taking precautionary actions to protect the eyes during the hot summer days, especially during heat waves.

According to the World Health Organization, 15 million people in the world are blind cataracts, and up to 10% of these individuals’ condition may have been caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation, reported Hindustan Times.

Here is how you can protect your eyes during the heat waves.

Wear sunglasses

Make sure to put on your sunglasses every time before stepping out. Try to use the ones with high UV protection and polarized lenses, as UV rays can cause various eye-related issues.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is the key. Drink plenty of water, as strong, hot winds can lead to dry eyes and dehydration. When you are hydrated enough your body is able to produce tears effectively.

Eat fruits and vegetables

Eat a well-balanced and healthy diet in the summer. Consume fruits and vegetables with high water intake, antioxidants and vitamins.

Don’t rub your eyes

Avoid rubbing your eyes with your hands, as it can cause infections. Wash your hands thoroughly. Dirty hands become prone to infections like conjunctivitis. Use a gentle tissue if you feel sudden itching in your eyes.

Use eye drops

Use eye drops to get rid of dry and irritated eyes. It is very important to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. Take a recommendation from your doctor to choose the right eye drops.
