Ismail Haniyeh's funeral: Everything you need to know

Hamas chief will be buried in Qatar on Friday

The chief of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, will be buried in the capital of Qatar, Doha.

Haniyeh was assassinated along with his bodyguard on Wednesday, July 31 in Iran’s capital, Tehran, by the Israeli airstrike on his residence.

According to TRT World, Haniyeh’s funeral prayers will be held a day after the public funeral in Iran, in Doha after Friday's prayers at the largest mosque of the city, Imam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque, and will be buried in Lusail, north of Qatar’s capital.

Hamas, in a statement, said the funeral ceremony in Doha would be held ‘with popular and factional attendance and the participation of Arab and Islamic leaders.’

Moreover, Iran has also announced the public funeral of the Hamas leader in the capital Tehran at 8:30 am local time (05:00 GMT).

As per Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will lead a prayer over Haniyeh’s body at the Tehran University to begin the funeral procession, which will head towards Azadi (Freedom) Square.

Haniyeh’s body will then be flown to Doha for burial.

To note, Khamenei only leads prayer for senior departed figures.
