Former Greece and Sheffield United defender George Baldock died at the age of 31 in southern Athens.

According to BBC, police, while confirming the death of a soccer player on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, said that Baldock was found dead in the swimming pool of his house in Glyfada.

The police, after arriving at the scene, tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation but could not revive him. The cause of death is still unknown.

The Baldock family said in a statement, “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss."

Moreover, Sheffield United extended condolences to its former defender's family and stated, “The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff, and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.”

Baldock, after spending seven years with Sheffield United, joined Panathinaikos this summer. The Greek side also expressed sadness at the “ultimate death” of their player.

Baldock started his career at MK Dons in 2009 and played more than 100 games for them. Before joining Sheffield United in 2017, he also played for Northampton and Oxford United.
