Six people died while two went missing after a boat capsized on a popular tourist destination, Lake Tahoe.
According to BBC, the incident happened on Saturday when fierce winds battered the lake on the border of California and Nevada, kicking up 8 ft-tall (2.5m) waves.
As per the US Coast Guard, the 27-ft-long gold Chris-craft boat carrying 10 people was caught in a large swell when winds gusted to 35mph (56km/h).
Moreover, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said that the emergency call about the capsized boat was reported around 15:00 local time. People on the boat fell in the water as air temperatures were swiftly falling, and the lake grew unexpectedly rough.
Two survivors were pulled from the water and sent to the hospital for hypothermia and other injuries, while six people were killed, and two are still missing.
The sheriff's Dive Team and Search and Rescue teams continued to search for the missing victims on Sunday near the shores of the DL Bliss State Park.
The officials said that temperatures dropped to near freezing on Saturday afternoon, and the strong waves knocked boats against the docks. Multiple boats were damaged in the storm, leaking contaminants into the water.
Notably, according to the University of California, Davis, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and has an average depth of 1,000ft.
