The white House has officially released its 2027 budget proposal which requests a record-breaking $1.5 trillion for defense spending.

This massive figure represents a 44% increase over previous levels highlighting the administration’s focus on military strength amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The plan emphasises modernizing the military through investments in new naval vessels, munitions and the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system. It also includes pay raises of 5% to 7% for troops.

To offset these costs, the administration is proposing a 10% cut to non-defense discretionary spending which would impact various social and environmental programs.

Explaining this shift in priorities, President Donald Trump stated, “We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care.” Regarding domestic services, he added, “You got to let a state take care of day care and they should pay for it, too.”

While the administration argues this budget is necessary to ensure safety in a “dangerous world,” the proposal is only a starting point. As budget officials notes, the goal is to “reinvest in America’s national security infrastructure.”

Because Congress holds the final authority over federal spending, lawmakers can significantly alter or reject these plans as they draft their own versions of the budget.
