King Haakon VII has revealed a heartbreaking fact after the demise of his late father, King Harald V.
The Norwegian monarch took over the throne on Friday, August 28th, after the sudden passing of his father.
As the country mourned the loss of its oldest ruling monarch, Haakon VII paid a heartbreaking tribute to his father just one day after his death.
On Saturday, August 29th, the Norwegian Royal Family turned to its official Instagram account to reveal that Harald has breathed his last just one day before his 58th wedding anniversary.
Sharing throwback photos featuring his parents, Harald and Queen Sonja, the grieving King recalled an emotional quote his father once said, "I don’t think anyone can live without love."
"Through a long life, they stood by each other’s side. Today, we also remember the love they shared over six decades," he lamented.
On the second day after taking over the throne, King Haakon revealed that on Saturday, August 29th, late Harald and Queen Sonja would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.
He kicked off the emotional post with a romantic photo of the couple, as the young pair is seen holding hands while lovingly gazing at each other.
King Harald and Queen Sonja's unique love story
For those unaware, King Harald and Queen Sonja were involved in a nine-year secret romance and courtship before they were finally allowed to marry.
They first met in 1959 and kept their relationship hidden for nearly a decade because Sonja was a commoner and royal tradition opposed the match.
After Crown Prince Harald gave an ultimatum threatening to remain unmarried for life (which would have ended the direct royal succession), King Olav V gave his consent, and the couple married on August 29, 1968.
This unique Norwegian love story ended as King Harald breathed his last on Friday, August 28th, after being hospitalised for a few days.
