Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses, raises concerns of high death toll

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore city of the US has collapsed and fallen into Patapsco River on Tuesday morning, after being hit by a container ship.

According to the Baltimore City Fire Department a large vessel hit a column of the Francis Scott Key Bridge at around 01:30 ET (05:30 GMT).

At least 20 people and several vehicles have fallen into the river, as per the fire department, who are currently present near the bridge.

Meanwhile, the Maryland Transportation Authority also confirmed on X that “All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured.”

Moreover, the director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, Chief Kevin Cartwright, confirmed to BBC that a rescue operation is being carried out at the moment, in collaboration with US Coastguard and other Maryland agencies to save the people and several vehicles that fallen into the river.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said, "I'm aware of and en route to the incident at the Key Bridge... Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway.”

Although it has been a few hours to the Baltimore bridge incident, no causalities have been reported yet.

Shortly after the incident occurred, the video of the collapsing bridge started taking rounds on the internet.
