Pro-Palestinian protest erupts outside Met Gala: ‘no celebration without liberation’

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protestors gathered outside the Met Gala event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday, demanding to end Israel’s war on Gaza.

According to TRT World, the Met Gala is a yearly fundraiser fashion event for the Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which attracts celebrities, fashion designers and mass media attention.

The pro-Palestinian protesters initially gathered at Hunter College and then marched through Manhattan towards the American fashion’s biggest night on May 6.

Among the rallying points were the gates of Columbia University, which have become an epi-center of pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Protesters gathered in Central Park were holding placards bearing messages such as ‘No Met Gala While Bombs Drop in Gaza,’ ‘No Celebration Without Liberation’, and ‘Free Gaza.’

The journalists present at the venue have confirmed several arrests, while the New York Daily reported the number was about a dozen.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) on X (formerly Twitter) said, “As hundreds of spectators gathered to watch their favourite celebrities walk up the carpet at the annual @metmuseum Gala, your NYPD Officers were out there ensuring everyone’s safety and security.”

For the unversed, in the seven months of Israel’s war, more than 34,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, the vast majority of whom have been women and children.
