Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised Biden as a "great public servant" and committed to supporting the Democratic effort to prevent Donald Trump's return.

California Governor Gavin Newsom:

California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed gratitude to Biden, lauding him as an "extraordinary, history-making president."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer commended Biden's selfless decision, emphasising his legacy as a dedicated leader who prioritized the country's future.

Former President Bill and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton:

Former President Bill Clinton and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have praised President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

In a joint statement, the Clintons lauded Biden's "extraordinary career of service" and expressed their honor in supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Republican reactions:

Republicans, on the other hand, expressed skepticism and criticism.

House Speaker Mike Johnson:

In a statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the Democratic Party’s prospects under Vice President Kamala Harris, stating, "The party's prospects are no better now with Vice President Kamala Harris, who co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration."

He also questioned his fitness to continue in office, urging him to resign immediately.

Representative Elise Stefanik:

Representative Elise Stefanik, the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House, also called for Biden's resignation, arguing that if he is unfit to run, he is unfit to serve. She blamed Democrats for the nation's issues, including the border crisis and inflation.

Senator Steve Daines of Montana:

Senator Steve Daines of Montana formally called for Biden's resignation, saying the president "is no longer capable of serving as President."

"Being President is the hardest job in the world, and I no longer have confidence that Joe Biden can effectively execute his duties as Commander-in-Chief," Daines said in a statement.

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson:

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson called the situation a "scandal of historic proportions," claiming Democrats lied about Biden's condition.
