Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed on Wednesday, July 31, at his residence in the capital of Iran, Tehran.

As per Al Jazeera report, Hamas and Iranian officials confirmed that Haniyeh was assassinated with one of his guards early on Wednesday during an Israeli raid targeting his residence.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pazeshkian.

Hamas's top political leader's death has sparked global reaction and condemnation.

Palestine

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas condemned the assassination of Haniyeh and described it as ‘a cowardly act and a dangerous development.

Iran

The spokesperson of Iran’s foreign ministry, Nasser Kanaani, said, “Haniyeh's martyrdom in Tehran will strengthen the deep and unbreakable bond between Tehran, Palestine, and the resistance."

Hezbollah

Hamas and Iran-aligned Lebanese armed group Hezbollah posted a statement on Telegram that read, “We in Hezbollah share with our dear brothers in the Hamas movement all the feelings of pain over the loss of this great leader, the feelings of anger at the enemy’s crimes, the feelings of pride that the leaders in our movements are leading their people and their mujahideen to martyrdom.”

Qatar

Qatar's foreign ministry stated, “Qatar strongly condemns the assassination of Dr. Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and considers this a heinous crime and a dangerous escalation, as well as a major violation of international and humanitarian laws.”

It further added. “The foreign ministry affirms that this assassination and Israel's reckless, continuous targeting of civilians in Gaza will push the region into a circle of chaos as well as limit the prospects of peace."

Türkiye

The foreign ministry of Türkiye said in a statement that Haniyeh’s killing ‘demonstrates that Israel’s Netanyahu government has no intention of achieving peace, adding, “(The) region will face much larger conflicts if the international community does not take action to stop Israel.”
