Indiana state police dog K-9 retires after eight years of service

K-9 Apache took a bullet in his neck for his handler during his service at Indiana State Police


After over eight years of service, the Indiana State Police K9 Apache retired after a “fun” retirement ceremony.

According to ABC News, the Indiana police announced that police dog Apache who worked as one half of the K-9 unit and partner of Trooper Walter Butt since September 2016 was given retirement with a ceremony on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

Indiana State Police said in a statement, “Apache received all his favorite things from his favorite people. In a fun ceremony with his favorite people, Indiana State Police K9 Apache retired from duty. He will enjoy retirement as a family pet with his lifelong partner Trooper Walter Butt.”

It further added, “In 2017 Apache stepped in front of his handler and took a bullet to the neck during an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was apprehended, Apache fully recovered, and returned to work 3 weeks later.”

Moreover, during his eight years of service with Trooper Butt Apache helped in seizing 954.28 pounds of illegal narcotics, 167 guns, 1.6 million dollars in drug money, 3.58 pounds of heroin, 302.99 pounds of methamphetamine, 587.33 pounds of marijuana, 5.56 pounds of cocaine, 3.19 pounds of ecstasy, and 51.53 pounds of other unlisted drugs.

He also accompanied police in 77 civil cases, bit seven suspects, and caught 84 criminals.

Indiana State Police thanked Apache for his services who will now enjoy his retirement with the Butt family.
