US Vice President JD Vance has warned of “painful, deeper cuts” if the government shutdown continues.
According to Associated Press, as the government shutdown entered into the 12th day, Vance on Sunday, October 12, said that their federal workers could face deeper cuts if it goes on.
The 41-year-old told Fox News, “The longer this goes on, the deeper the cuts are going to be. To be clear, some of these cuts are going to be painful. This is not a situation that we relish. This is not something that we’re looking forward to, but the Democrats have dealt us a pretty difficult set of cards.”
The comments have increased the anxiety of thousands of workers who are currently furloughed without pay due to the deadlock between Republicans and Democrats.
The Office of Management and Budget, in a court filing on Friday, revealed that over 4,000 federal employees will soon lose their jobs even popular attractions, including Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo, could also be hit with temporary shutdowns due to lack of funding.
However, the Trump administration ensures to pay military personnel on time and provide low-income Americans essential services, such as food assistance.
The US government shutdown began on October 1 after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill until the deadline despite a meeting with President Donald Trump at the Oval Office.
The Trump administration and the opposition have been pointing fingers at each other for the shutdown.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, during an appearance on Fox News Sunday, said, “We have repeatedly made clear that we will sit down with anyone, anytime, anyplace. Republicans control the House, the Senate and the presidency. It’s unfortunate they’ve taken a my-way-or-the-highway approach.”
Meanwhile, Republicans, including Trump, have blamed Democrats for the first shutdown since 2019.
