In a major surprise, superstar defensive lineman Aaron Donald is officially coming out of retirement. He agreed to a one-year, $20 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams that can reach up to $30 million with performance incentives.
The 35-year-old tackle confirmed his comeback on social media posting a picture of himself in uniform with a simple caption: “We back #Rams #Ready.” His wife, Erica, also shared the excitement, posting online: “I let him out the house y’all.”
End of a two-year absence
Donald originally walked away from football in March 2024 after 10 dominant seasons, stating at the time that he no longer had the passion to endure the endless workouts. He admitted back then:
“I felt like I didn’t have the passion to train all year around anymore. I didn’t have the passion to think about playing 17 games and all the work that I gotta put into it.”
Now, after spending over two years focusing on his family and maintaining peak physical condition, Donald feels ready to chase another ring.
Superteam defense assembled
A primary reason for Donald’s return was the Rams acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. The pairing brings together two of the most dominant defenders of this era, who have combined for five Defensive Player of the Year titles.
After observing a workout in front of team staff, Rams head coach Sean McVay shared high praise stating that Donald “looked outstanding.”
Super bowl ambitions
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year already boasts 111 career sacks and a Super Bowl victory. By re-joining Los Angeles, Donald puts his Hall of Fame eligibility timeline on hold to give the Rams the single most feared defensive line in football ahead of the new season.
