Rani Mukerji has suffered a heartbreaking loss.
On Tuesday afternoon, September 22, the Chalte Chalte actress’s family issued an emotional statement, announcing that playback singer Krishna Mukerji died at the age of 75.
In the message, the family also requested fans to respect their privacy as they navigate through the devastating grief.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief,” read the message.
While no cause of death was shared immediately, an insider shared that she died of cardiac arrest.

In a 2025 interview, Rani Mukerji shared that her mother, Krishna Mukerji, was the one who encouraged her to pursue a career in acting.
The Veer Zaara actress also light-heartedly recalled that when she gave audition for the 1996 drama film Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat, her mum was the one who asked the movie’s producer to not give her the role due to her bad acting.
“So for my mother, it was like you do it and see how it goes. Though after my first screen test, she found me so bad that she told the producer 'I think you'll ruin your film by taking my daughter. You'll go through losses. Better you don't take her,’” she shared.
Rani continued, “Because the producer was very keen to sign me, Salim uncle (Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat producer)....But my mom was smart enough to understand that I was not doing a good job. So she was like, 'I don't think you should take her.’”
