Mexico’s presidential contenders address social programs in 2nddebate
Claudia Sheinbaum, Even Gálvez, Álvarez Máynez walked Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s line

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s social programs earned repeated support from Mexico’s leading presidential candidates during their second debate that was held on April 28 ahead of the country’s June 2 election.

Representative of the president’s Morena party, Claudia Sheinbaum, still leads Xóchitl Gálvez of a coalition made to oppose parties as well as Álvarez Máynez from the Citizen Movement party.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador has strikingly raised Mexico’s minimum wage and raised spending on social programs that are mostly structured on direct cash transfers.

Claudia Sheinbaum promised to continue these as she has been benefitting from her mentor’s popularity, as per AP News.

While committing to them, she called his government policies “humanist, honest model, protector of our patrimony, better salaries, better pensions, without raising taxes.”

Her most significant competitor, Even Gálvez, proposed that she would also carry on with these costly popular programs if elected, then highlighted about understanding poverty because of her background and knowing the helpfulness of a scholarship.

On the other hand, former congressman Álvarez Máynez introduced his own blueprint for bringing down work week from six to five days in Mexico.

Not only this, he spoke of having plans to increase vacation leaves and provide paternity relief, pointing that despite Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s high social spending, young children only receive a fraction of it because “they don’t vote.”

All three of these candidates agreed on major changes required for fresh water supply that has worsened since Mexico hit a prolonged drought.

Claudia Sheinbaum then moved them toward environment and climate problems by pledging to install solar panels on wholesale market rooftops and bringing more electric bikes and buses.
