Canada probe finds foreign interference in elections

An official probe has revealed evidence of foreign interference in Canada's last two federal elections.

As per Reuters, the results of the votes remained unaffected and the electoral system was deemed robust, according to initial findings released on Friday.

However, the interim report confirms Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's assertion that China attempted to meddle in the elections, although it did not impact the results.

While, the commission overseeing the investigation plans to release its final report by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Beijing has consistently denied any involvement in electoral interference.

Commissioner Marie-Josee Hogue, who is leading the independent public inquiry said in an official statement noting, "Acts of foreign interference did occur during the last two federal general elections, but they did not undermine the integrity of our electoral system."

She added, "Our system remains sound. Voters were able to cast their ballots, their votes were duly registered and counted, and there is nothing to suggest that there was any interference whatsoever in this regard."

Hogue further emphasizes," Nonetheless, the acts of interference that occurred are a stain on our electoral process and impacted the process leading up to the actual vote."
