Bangladesh protests surge as thousands call for PM Sheikh Hasina’s resignation

Bangladesh protest result in 20 injuries

Massive protests erupted across Bangladesh on Friday, August 2, with thousands taking to the streets to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Demonstrations were marked by violent clashes with the police, resulting in at least 20 injuries, as per Reuters.

The protesters, many of them students, called for justice for the 150 people killed in last month’s protests against a job quota system.

In the capital, Dhaka, crowds chanted "we want justice" and carried anti-government banners.

Meanwhile, other parts of the country saw even more intense unrest, with buildings, including a ruling party office, set on fire and police booths attacked.

Police in the northeastern town of Habibganj and the city of Sylhet responded with rubber bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades to disperse the crowds.

The demonstrations initially started last month over job quotas that favoured families of 1971 independence war veterans, which led to deadly violence and widespread arrests.

Despite a Supreme Court decision to scrap most of the quotas, student-led protests have resumed, demanding accountability for the deaths.
