During winter, it becomes harder to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle due to the season’s coughs, cold and flu, which make the body feel tired and less energetic.
What should be done in such a situation to easily take care of heart health?
Although regular exercise is important for health, the type and intensity of exercise should be adjusted to fit the specific needs and challenges of the season.
Dr. Anjan Siotia, Director of Cardiology, BM Birla Heart Hospital, recently told Financial Express, “Indoor activities like yoga, stretching, light aerobics, and resistance training are excellent options for staying active while avoiding exposure to extreme cold.”
He added, “It is crucial to include proper warm-up and cool-down routines to prevent strain on the cardiovascular system. Dietary habits also play a vital role in heart health during winter.”
A diet packed with seasonal superfoods like leafy greens, root vegetables, citrus fruits and omega-3-rich foods like nuts and seeds can help reduce inflammation and support healthy cholesterol levels.
He further adviced, “Staying hydrated, even during cold months, supports blood flow and overall cardiovascular function. Additionally, dressing warmly and avoiding sudden exposure to extreme temperatures can minimize stress on the heart.”
“Consistent sleep patterns and stress management are also key to reducing the risk of heart-related complications during winter,” he said.
In order to maintain good health, it’s just as important to cut back on unhealthy foods like fried snacks, sugary drinks and alcohol.
