Thailand and Cambodia continued to exchange fire despite agreeing to begin ceasefire talks.

According to Associated Press, after US President Donald Trump called for the immediate ceasefire talk between Thailand and Cambodia, the neighbouring countries, on Sunday, July 27, they showed interest in negotiation.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Saturday, wrote, “(Thailand and Cambodia) have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!”

Both of the countries thanked Trump for his concern and efforts and showed their readiness for dialogue and ceasefire but continued shelling overnight.

In the four days of ongoing border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, at least 34 people have died, while more than 168,000 citizens have been displaced.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Sunday claimed that after the US president told him that Thailand has agreed to stop attacking, his country is ready for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire. This is positive news for the soldiers and people of both countries.”

Manet has ordered Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to coordinate with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for direct ceasefire negotiation with Thailand’s foreign minister.

For the unversed, tension between Thailand and Cambodia began on Thursday after a landmine injured five Thai soldiers, triggering a fight between the two countries.
