Dame Penelope Keith has tragically died. She was 86.
The actress – who was known for her roles in popular sitcoms, including The Good Life and To The Manor Born has passed away on Monday, June 29th.
After her brief illness, the critically acclaimed English actress and presenter died in her residence in Surrey surrounded by her loved ones.
Family reveals cause of death
Her devastated family members issued a statement revealing the cause of the death of the television star, stating, "We are deeply saddened to announce that Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully."
"Whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey, where she had lived for more than 50 years. The family is grateful for the care and support she received throughout her treatments, and ask that their privacy be respected at this time," they added.
Deceased actress survived by how many family members?
Dame Penelope Keith was survived by her husband, Rodney Timson, and their two children, who are not widely recognised.
The deceased actress began her career on stage and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963, but became a household name for her work in sitcoms.
Notably, the legendary performer was made a Dame in 2014 for her services to drama and charity.
Dame had several meetings with the royal family through her roles with the Film and TV Charity and the Artists Benevolent Fund.
A royal meeting with King Charles
She also had a chance to share a light-hearted moment with the then-Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, during a reception for the Actors’ Benevolent Fund at Clarence House in 2007.
The veteran stage star last met with His Majesty in November 2024, after he took over the throne in 2023, at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the centenary of the Film and TV Charity.
Dame Penelope's association with Royal Family:
She was associated with the British Royal Family primarily through her philanthropic work with royal charities, presenting royal documentaries, and receiving a formal honour from the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Dame was also a patron and fundraiser for the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
She last attended the Duchess of Kent’s funeral at Westminster Cathedral last September alongside her husband Rodney Timson.
Chichester Festival Theatre tribute
The Chichester Festival Theatre also paid a heartfelt tribute, reflecting her working experience: "We are greatly saddened by the death of Dame Penelope Keith CBE, who appeared at Chichester Festival Theatre many times over four decades."
"Rightly acclaimed as a consummate player of comedy, with immaculate timing and mastery of witty repartee, Dame Penelope could also summon great emotional depth," they noted.
They concluded the statement with a heartbreaking message as she, "Will be hugely missed, and our thoughts and sympathies are with her family and friends."
Dame Penelope Keith had a celebrated 40-year association with the Chichester Festival Theatre spanning classic comedies, new plays, and poetry.
She performed there in 1969, where she first met her husband while he was on duty as a police officer in the mid-1970s.
