US President Joe Biden on Friday said that he will sign a legislation that will grant Chinese-company ByteDance to divest the popular short video app TikTok used by 170 million Americans upon which Donald Trump has expressed his concerns.
The measure that was approved by the committee unanimously on Thursday will now be sent to the US House of Representatives where there will be a vote on the crackdown of the TikTok bill on Tuesday or Wednesday.
The bill needs a two-thirds majority to get approval. President Biden said, “If they pass it, I will sign it.”
Donald Trump, who is contesting against Biden for presidential election and trying to make a comeback to the White House in November, raised his objection to banning TikTok.
Trump said that 'if you get rid of TikTok, Facebook will double its business,’ which he doesn’t want.
It is pertinent to note that during the US Capitol riots in Jan 2021, Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were revoked and were later restored in February 2023.
According to the bill, ByteDance will be given 165 days and if it fails to divest TikTok in the given time, app stores operated by Google, Apple and Alphabet will not provide web hosting to TikTok and ByteDance apps.
Trump also tried to ban TikTok and WeChat in 2020 but was stopped by the court. The election campaign of Trump has not joined TikTok while Biden's campaign joined TikTok last month.
