Javed Akhtar recalls turbulent childhood: 'The trauma stays with me'
Javed Akhtar reveals he lived on streets and went hungry for days during teenage years

Javed Akhtar has shed light on his dark early days as he sat for a heart-to-heart chat with Mojo Story.

Akhtar, who now enjoys a successful career as a writer, reportedly suffered greatly when he landed in Mumbai as a teenager.

“I remember that and I feel very thankful for life. Instead of getting sad about it or feeling victimized or persecuted, I feel very thankful for life,” the Dunki lyricist told Mojo Story.

He further recalled dire times when he had no food to eat and no shelter, “There are 2-3 incidents that have traumatized me very badly, and that trauma has stayed with me.”

“Like being hungry for 2-3 days. On the third day, there is no difference between a human being and a dog. Your all sense of dignity, and self-respect, everything becomes so vague and out of focus. The only thing you know is that you’re hungry.”

At the same time, Akhtar expressed his gratitude for all the blessings he now has.

“Instead of feeling victimized or deprived, I should feel happy. I have been given so much,” he added.
