India elections: Narendra Modi is seeking a historic third term as Prime Minister

India began to vote in the world’s largest election on Friday, April 19, to choose their next parliament and Prime Minister for the next five years.

According to CNN, in the biggest elections of human history, about 969 million people are eligible to vote and the polls will be concluded over the course seven phases.

Voters will be casting ballots for 543 seats in lower house parliament, ‘Lok Sabha.’

In the first phase voters from constituencies in 21 states and union territories across India will vote electronically for 102 parliament seats.

The world’s most populous elections will take exactly 47 days to find out who won the power.

Moreover, Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) aims to win an outright majority against an alliance of two dozen opposition parties.

As per Reuters, Modi wrote in BJP’s election manifesto, ‘Modi ki Guarantee,’ “In the next five years, we will take our nation into the top three economies of the world, launch a final and decisive assault against poverty, open up newer avenues of growth ... unveil the next generation of reforms, and take a number of pro-people decisions and actions.”

Minutes before the polling, Modi took to X (Formerly Twitter) to urge voters to create a new voting history.

Modi wrote in a post on X, “I urge all those voting ... to exercise their franchise in record numbers… I particularly call upon the young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers. After all, every vote counts, and every voice matters.”
