Dua Lipa had to stop using social media for a while when her dancing video from a 2017 concert became an embarrassing meme as people compared her to a “pencil in a pencil sharpener.”

In a recent interview with The Guardian, she said, “When people took that snippet of me dancing online and just turned it into a meme… then when I won the best new artist Grammy.”

“And people were like, ‘She’s not deserving of it, got no stage presence, not going to stick around.’ Those things were hurtful. It was humiliating. I had to take myself off Twitter,” the singer expressed.

There was one particular comment that brought in more trolls.

A user had written on YouTube, “I like her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” which soon became a very popularly quoted line on the internet.

To date, it is used for many other celebrities around the world, such as Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Janhvi Kapoor, Blackpink, and Addison Rae.

Speaking about the shame, Dua Lipa continued, “In the public eye, I was figuring out who I was as artist, performer. All that was happening while I was 22, 23 years old and still growing up.”

The vocalist even mentioned that, at one point, she “couldn’t get out of bed” because her emotions regarding reputation became “most heightened.”
