OpenAI is all set to challenge the significant dominance of Google in the online search market with a new AI search engine.

According to The Guardian, the company announced on Thursday, July 25, that the search engine SearchGPT, which uses generative artificial intelligence to produce results, will be launched for a small group of users and publishers in the initial stage.

OpenAI said in a blog post, “Getting answers on the web can take a lot of effort, often requiring multiple attempts to get relevant results. We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from the web, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier.”

The company asserted that SearchGPT is a temporary prototype that will use all AI models of the company to search the internet and will provide up-to-date information with ‘clear links to relevant sources.’

It further informed that the search engine will allow users to ask questions in natural language, the way they talk with ChatGpt. Users can even ask additional follow-up questions after receiving the result of the previous question.

To note, Google has been solely dominating the search engine market for years. As per web analytics firm Statcounter as of June 2024, Google dominates the search engine market with a 91.1% share.
