Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of Palestinian resistance group Hamas, has been killed on Wednesday in an Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran, Iran.

According to a statement from Hamas, Haniyeh was killed early Wednesday morning, shortly after participating in the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president.

"Hamas mourns to our great Palestinian people, to the Arab and Islamic nations, and to all the free people of the world, the martyr, the Mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, who was killed in a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran after participating in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president," it said in a statement on Telegram.

The Iranian government has initiated an investigation into the killing of Hamas leader, with results expected to be released soon.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the killing, but suspicion immediately fell on Israel, which has previously vowed to kill him and other Hamas leaders.

Israel has a history of targeting Haniyeh's family members in Gaza.

While Israel has not commented on the attack, analysts on Iranian state television have already pointed fingers at Israel for the attack.

Ismail Haniyeh had been a key figure in the Palestinian political and resistance movement, particularly during Israel's military campaigns in Gaza.
