Angela Carini's Paris fight ends in unforeseen exit: What really happened?

Italian boxer Angela Carini's Paris Olympics campaign ended abruptly on Thursday after just 46 seconds.

Carini, who was competing in the 66-kilogram (145.5-pound) welterweight class, abandoned her bout against Algerian fighter Imane Khelif, leaving a spot of blood on her trunks.

Carini's exit was not intended as a political statement but reignited debates surrounding Khelif's eligibility.

Who is Angela Carini's?

Carini, a silver medalist at the 2019 World and European Championships and a former European youth champion, came to Paris with a goal to honor her late father and coach.

Known as the "tiger," a nickname given by her father Giuseppe, Carini switched from clay pigeon shooting to boxing to follow her brother’s path. Despite her achievements, she faced a setback in Tokyo, losing her opening fight.

Controversy and reactions after her withdrawal:

Carini’s early departure from the ring sparked discussions about Khelif's participation. Khelif, who was disqualified from last year’s world championships due to a gender eligibility test, faced scrutiny again.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and IOC President Thomas Bach discussed the issue, with the IOC defending Khelif’s right to compete. Italian Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malagò confirmed that Khelif met the required parameters.

Reason for withdrawal:

Post-bout, a tearful Carini explained her decision to retire from the fight, saying, "My face and nose were hurting, I couldn’t breathe anymore. I thought about my family, looked at my brother in the stands, and decided to retire. I’ve never been hit with such a powerful punch," reported Gazzetta dello Sport.

She added, "All this controversy makes me sad. I’m sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision."

Carini also apologized for not shaking Khelif’s hand, explaining, "It wasn’t something I intended to do. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke. I don’t have anything against Khelif. Actually, if I were to meet her again, I would embrace her."
