Brazil's Supreme Court lifted the ban on Elon Musk’s X after the social media platform paid millions of dollars fine.

According to Al Jazeera, Brazil's top court judge, Judge Alexandre de Moraes, in his ruling on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, said, “I authorize the immediate return of the activities” of the X (formerly Twitter). He ordered the communication regulator to make the social media platform accessible to the public once again within 24 hours.

Reacting to the decision of court X through its global affairs account, it expressed that it is proud to be back in Brazil, and it would “continue to defend freedom of speech, within the boundaries of the law” in every country where it is operated.

For the unversed, the platform was banned in Brazil after a long row between X and Judge Moraes, who accused the platform of weakening democracy by allowing the spread of disinformation.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also warned that the country would not “be intimidated by individuals, companies or digital platforms that believe themselves to be above the law.”

X which had 22 million users in Brazil, last week complied with a top court judge's demands and paid about a $5.2 million fine for the restoration of the platform in the country.
